'I started making artists' books during my MA in Authorial Illustration at Falmouth when I was exploring the idea of telling stories in one frame. Since graduating in 2011, I've continued with this subject by producing artists' books made from etchings and laser cut designs.'
Joanna created limited edition artists' books made from etchings and laser cut artwork. She uses concertina books as a format for visual storytelling, a format that allows her to create three dimensional landscapes against which a narrative can be depicted. The books are illustrated by etching or laser cuttings, and can be displayed as large, panoramic paper structures.
The chosen physical setting of each story is often mirrored in the look of each book: Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is depicted in a silhouetted cut-out landscape of nineteenth century Edinburgh, while The Tempest is set in the hilly, panoramic landscape of the Minack Theatre in Cornwall. For Joanna, the location contributes to the narrative of each book and is as important as the story itself.
Joanna studied Modern History at the University of St Andrews before going on to complete an MA in Authorial Illustration at University College Falmouth. She currently lives in Edinburgh.
